The Final Cut Express (FCE) is a non-linear video editing application, which is the consumer version of Final Cut Pro and is designed for advanced editing of digital video as well as high-definition video. The editing software is considered as a "step" above iMovie in terms of capabilities, but a "step" underneath Final Cut Pro and its suite of applications.

However, FCE doesn't support for 1080p and 24 fps timeline. If you are editing your Canon 550D, Canon HF10, Canon HV30, Panasonic HDC-TM700, Sony HDR-SR12/11, Sony HDR-AX2000, HDR-XR550VE, or other AVCHD footage in FCE, it is recommended to convert the raw video footage to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) at first and then import the converted HD .mov video to FCE for editing which can help you maintain the image quality of your AVCHD camera. A powerful AVCHD MTS to FCE ConverterFoxreal Video Converter for Mac is recommended here.

The Apple Intermediate Codec is a high-quality 8-bit 4:2:0 video codec used mainly as a less processor-intensive way of working with long-GOP MPEG-2 footage such as HDV. The Final Cut Express supports real-time editing in AVCHD format (currently for Intel processors only), but they must be rendered which is slow in FCE. So the AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) is recommended for use with all HD workflows in Final Cut Express and iMovie.
