Probably the two most spoken about smartphones at the moment are the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S2 (S II). The Galaxy S2 has yet to see a U.S. release but has been rumored for July, and many were hoping to see the next iPhone announced at this week’s Apple WWDC. It did not appear and the most likely time now for the next iPhone release seems to be September so it seems that the Samsung Galaxy S2 could really benefit from the no-show of the iPhone 5 yet.
News on both of these smartphones has been coming in thick and fast so hit the links if you want to catch up. We’ve previously told about Galaxy S2 sales against the iPhone 4 in the U.K. where it has already been released and the Galaxy S2 has knocked the iPhone 4 off its top slot in sales, so there’s no doubting the popularity of the S2. OSM’s Maddy Rowe also recently discussed the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S2 and pointed out that if the Galaxy S2 does in fact resemble the next iPhone, this could also harm iPhone 5 sales. As far as the U.S. release for the Galaxy S2 goes we’ve told of rumors for a Sprint release in July with the name Within, and a Verizon release also in July with the name Function. The source for the latter story was later found to be incorrect and about another product but of course the Verizon version of the Galaxy S2 could still turn up in July.

As far as the iPhone 5 or 4S goes there has been an awful lot of confusion about this, which we attempted to clear up earlier today. We still think it’s likely that the next iPhone will appear in September, at the same time as the next mobile operating system, iOS 5. Today we also heard that the mysterious iPhone 4S that many have been talking about, might in fact be a version of the iPhone 4 but coming to Sprint and T-Mobile. If this is the next iPhone and doesn’t arrive until the fall and the iPhone 5 doesn’t arrive until 2012 this would mean even more chance for huge sales for the Galaxy S2. Earlier today we also heard how the beta version of iOS 5 contains hints of two new iPhone models along with two new iPads, so it would make sense for one of those at least to release this year but it could be the 4S and not a major upgrade.

Certainly the lack of information from Apple about any kind of upcoming availability for the next iPhone may well lead to impatience amongst consumers who could decide that if they just don’t know when the iPhone 5 is coming they might instead try the Android platform. Maybe Apple’s strategy is that by not saying anything about a new iPhone release people will continue to hope that it’s coming soon and hold off buying an alternative, but if so that’s surely a move that could backfire. We’d say it’s likely that if people who would have purchased an iPhone turn instead to trying an Android smartphone, they would have to go a long way to beat the Galaxy S2, which has had rave reviews. The more we look into it then, the more likely it seems that Samsung and its Galaxy S2 will gain a lot from there being no news of the next iPhone.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. Were you waiting for the iPhone 5 but lack of information might sway you to buy an Android? Maybe you were thinking of opting for the Galaxy S2 anyway but the no-show of an iPhone has made up your mind for you? Let us know with your comments.
